Mare is the visionary Partner, Editor and Radio Host for Alpha Mare Media. She holds a Baccalaureate in Philosophy of Religion from Mount Holyoke College—a degree which has nothing whatsoever to do with her work in the Thoroughbred racing industry. Logic, reasoning and faith, however, are inextricably bound up with her passion for the horses and the Sport—so there is some sort of deeper connection there.
She first rode a horse at age four; that same year her Mother dragged her off to Green Mountain Park to see her cousins' Thoroughbreds race. By age 12 she'd found the rail at the Saratoga Clubhouse, and the love affair officially began. She finally found her niche in our enthralling Sport in 2003: Penny Chenery took Mare under her wing, and she found her calling as a racing communicator. She has just completed the (long, painful, joyous) task of researching and writing her first book, the true story of Horse of the Year, Azeri; her career as a Champion and the brilliant Paulson men who bred, loved and raced her to glory.
A few (male) turf writers have accused her of writing "…like…a…girl"—the implication being, of course, that she'll never make it as a racing communicator. Ah, well: as Azeri is also "a girl," we have no doubt that Mare's passionate telling of the great mare's story is a perfect match.
Mare is a New York State-licensed Thoroughbred owner. Her membership in NYTHA (New York Thoroughbred Horsewoman's [-men's] Association; NYTB (New York Thoroughbred Breeders; Thoroughbred Women, Ltd. and the Saratoga Thoroughbred Club all inspire, educate and contribute to her depth of knowledge of the breed and the Sport. Her volunteer interests are all Thoroughbred-related, of course: she should probably get a hobby off the track, but there's just no time or interest. Her mantra is, "If it don't have four legs and a mane—it ain't an athlete!"
