Mission and Goals
WHAT, you may ask yourself, is Alpha Mare Media?!?!?
• Alpha Mare Media…
(www.AlphaMareMedia.com) is the world's only media company for women in Thoroughbred racing. Our first projects are to present the only website and the only radio show on the planet by, for and about women in the sport.
We have three very specific Goals in mind, each of which eventually crosses paths with the others:
- To encourage and nurture those women and girls who are already involved in the Sport.
- To present opportunities for involvement in the Sport, to open doors to creativity and exploration, for those women and girls who THINK they may want a career here.
- To educate those women and girls who know nothing about this Sport--who may be intrigued by the Sport, but who have no idea where to START. Those of us who are fanatics take everything for granted, but think about how you first got interested: wouldn't it have been great to have a place you could go, a safe, nurturing spot, where your questions could be answered, and anticipated? Where weekly lessons, on everything you need to know about Thoroughbreds, racing and the culture thereof--are taught?
A key facet of this third goal is to help grow the fanbase by educating and nurturing those who may be potential fans and professionals in this beautiful, thrilling, heartbreaking Sport of ours. Women and girls—the next generation of Thoroughbred owners, trainers, breeders and other professionals and fans—are the richest natural resource we have to grow this Sport securely into the 21st Century.
In other words: if the Sport won't WAKE UP and acknowledge the enormous marketing opportunity, to market itself to women and girls--we WILL. We can't take out a $10,000 ad in Town & Country, as Leroy Jolley brilliantly suggested to me last year--but I can do this.
• Alpha Mare Media...
...is a weekly, one-hour long radio program, during which I'll interview a woman who works in some area in the Sport. (Owners, trainers, handicappers, grooms, hotwalkers, artists, writers, photographers, exercise riders, jockeys, publishing, bloodstock agency, pedigree analysis, etc.) The show's content will change from week-to-week: some weeks, may take phone calls. Other weeks, I may wax on about something that's on my mind. Or I'll handicap a major upcoming race, giving credit to the best handicappers in the country.
• Alpha Mare Media...
...is very much a work of the women of the world: the website already has six gifted (women) Writers on-board, two of whom live and work in the UK (Newmarket and Devon).
(The remainder of our Writers thus far are scattered across America. We’re working to secure more international contributors, from Dubai, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, South Africa--if Thoroughbreds are racing there, we want to hear from the women in that country!!) ...is an open door--the opportunity for women in racing, or around racing, or fascinated by racing--to participate. Do you know a Writer? A photographer? Artist? Sculptor? Executive? Owner/ Trainer/ pinhooker/etc. who has something to say? Let us know about it. This 'site is for YOU--for me--for US, the women of racing, racing women of the world.
• Alpha Mare Media...
is going to be FUN! Yes, we’re Feminists. Yes, our mission is to make the Sport of Kings more egalitarian, for women, girls, fillies and mares. Absolutely.
But, by this time in our lives, we’ve learned that a fly is better caught with honey than with vinegar.
So think of Alpha Mare Media as Fun Feminism: men ARE welcome.
This 'site and show are NOT anti-male--we're PRO-female!
All men are the sons of some woman, somewhere...so we want them to feel welcome to read our 'site; listen to our show; learn about something new and maybe gain some insight into the women and girls in their lives, especially those with whom they live and work in the Sport.
All the writing, photography, art, etc., will be the product of womanly minds and souls--definitely.
But our readership and listenership are open to the entire world!
We do, indeed, aim to make Alpha Mare Media a worldwide entity: the Internet is a brilliant tool, and we will use it to its fullest potential. SO many nations around the world have great Thoroughbred racing, and women/girls who are involved, or who WANT to be.
So this website, this radio show, are, indeed, for women all over the planet. In those nations where women are not welcome to participate in the Sport at ALL--think of our radio program as Freedom Radio.
In nations where women DO participate, but who may not feel fully respected, or otherwise disenfranchised--we'll encourage, cajole and nurture them. We’re mounting the (virtual) Million Mare March, a free club with membership cards; great merchandise available and opportunities for camaraderie in the Real World—outside these virtual “walls.” We’re already planning the first-annual Alpha Mare Gathering of the Herd, our annual educational and networking conference here in Saratoga Springs (2008).
Alpha Mare Media is the one-stop, full-service, virtual and “real-live’ community for racing females. We’ll grow together, build community, brainstorm and learn from each other.
Working with the ENORMOUS potential of the great women and men who've responded positively thus far--we'll break from the gate with a LEAP!
Out of the gate we go…run fast, turn left!
